- Stars are divided into classes according to the lines they display in their spectrums. According to the currently used
- Harvard classification, stars are divided into seven main types, which are further divided into subtypes 0 to 9. The main
- types are O-, B-, A-, F-, G-, K- and M.

- In addition to the aforementioned, further types exist:
- C stars, which are red coal stars,
- S stars, which are red stars,
- P stars, which are planetary nebulae,
- Q stars, which are novas
- W stars, which are Wolf-Rayert stars.
